Who is SCRID?

Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (SCRID) is a chapter of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and was organized in 1967 then incorporated with a non-profit status in 1971. This chapter of professionals who provide sign language interpretation for Deaf/deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people is comprised of both deaf and hearing interpreters. They can be certified by the national RID, California Coalition of Agencies Serving the Deaf, the National Association of the Deaf, and/or other local entities.

SCRID serves its membership by sponsoring professional development seminars, workshops in preparation for certification, diagnostic feedback and promoting adherence to ethical standards. SCRID keeps its members apprised of professional activities with an informative, quarterly publication. There are four classifications of membership: Regular; Student; Organizational; and Supporting. Most SCRID members are practitioners and work on a contract basis. Many are students of Interpreter Preparation Programs on an educational track to become professional interpreters.

SCRID actively participates in the efforts to influence legislation affecting the rights of consumers of sign language interpretation. SCRID strives to comply with the needs of its members as they are made known to the officers, who are elected by the membership, and in accordance with the direction of the national RID.

Philosophy Statement - The philosophy of Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (SCRID) is that excellence in the delivery of interpretation and transliteration services among people who are Deaf, or Hard of Hearing, and people who are hearing, will ensure effective communication. As a professional association, SCRID encourages collaboration and membership participation in the pursuit of excellence in the profession of interpretation and transliteration of American Sign Language and English. To that end, SCRID serves as an essential resource for its members and the community.

Mission Statement - It is the mission of Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf to provide local forums and an organizational structure for the continued growth and development of the professions of interpretation and transliteration of American Sign Language and English.

Goal Statement - It is the goal of Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf to promote the profession of interpreting and transliterating American Sign Language and English.
