0.6 RID CEUs in the category of Professional Studies will be offered by The Language Door, LLC, an approved RID CMP and ACET sponsor. Activity # 0264-0110-07 This workshop for Interpreters and ITP students will focus on understanding the role and definition of the interpreter when working with Deaf-Blind and low vision individuals. Discussion will cover the perceptions of the Deaf-Blind community, including recognizing the differences between being an interpreter and a Service Support Provider (SSP). Additional topics will include boundaries while working as an interpreter and a SSP, situational assessment, decision-making process and its impact on interpretation. Linguistic and cultural adjustments will be incorporated throughout the workshop. The workshop will include hands on activities and simulations. The workshop will be presented in ASL. Mala S. Poe, Ed.S. CI, CT, NAD IV has been interpreting since 1989 and specifically working with Deaf-Blind persons since 1992. Currently she is a staff interpreter for UC San Diego and teaches Interpreting at San Diego Mesa Community College. Mala has interpreted, coordinated, and has been a Team leader for AADB for several years. She has presented Deaf-Blind/SSP training workshops in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. She attended the Deaf-Blind Interpreter training at Helen Keller National Center and currently serves as Vice-Chair for the Deaf-Blind Member Section under RID, and is Vice President for the San Diego Chapter of RID.
Rick La Bar, CI, CT, NAD-IV has been a certified interpreter since 1975. He received his training through the National Interpreter Training Consortium at CSUN. He has worked as an interpreter Coordinator and a freelance interpreter. He has worked extensively as an educational interpreter at SDSU. He has 20+ years experience in judicial interpreting and performing arts interpreting. Rick has been active with the Deaf Blind community for many years. He has developed the complex skills and techniques required for this unique community. He attended the “Touching Lives” training at Helen Keller National Center and currently serves as the Region V representative for RID’s Deaf-Blind Member Section, and is President of San Diego County RID. |
