    About the Workshop

People who use American Sign Language (ASL) have various backgrounds, education, and experience associated with the language and its people.  Sometimes we do not meet "eye to eye" on what it is, and this workshop can and will discuss the individual parts of the language that makes up the whole language.  The parts taken in focus are in sign choices, depiction, syntactic mapping, and discourse analysis. It is the expectation at the end of the workshop, the participants will gain a better understanding with ASL and to find direction how they move ahead.

    Learning objectives:

    • Participants will gain a understanding of the following items:

    • How we determine sign choices through history to the present date along with language attitudes

    • Understanding depiction role in language use, especially the three parts:  depiction apart from depiction or classifiers (SASSes), Roleshifting/Surrogates, and Use of Space

    • Syntactic mapping differences between ASL and English, and other languages

    • Looking at ASL at the discourse level and seeing how much is involved

This workshop will be conducted in American Sign Language. No voice interpretation will be provided.

For other interpretation requests contact pdc@scrid.org by February 11, 2020.
