Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf


SCRID is an affiliate chapter of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). It is the mission of the Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf to promote best practices, equity, and representation within the profession of Sign Language Interpreting; provide professional development and education for current and future practitioners; serve as a forum for ongoing assessment of and response to community needs; and, advocate to the public for the highest standards in the provision of interpreting services for users of both sign languages and spoken languages.

This workshop is designed for New SCRID volunteer leaders as well as any member of the signing community wishing to become familiar with the SCRID organizational structure.

At the little/no knowledge level.


Workshop Description: 

This training is part of a series for new SCRID volunteer leaders designed to introduce the SCRID organizational structure, foundational documentation and resources.  This session will focus on the SCRID organizational structure and website: what SCRID does, who does it, and where to find it.


A detailed description of how to navigate the SCRID website will be conducted.  


Workshop Objectives - Participants will:

  • Describe the major functions of the two components organizational structure of SCRID leadership.

  • List two officer and two committee chair positions and who fills them

  • List the basic structure of the SCRID website (tabs, side bar, etc)

  • Locate three sections located in the SCRID website

  • Describe the functions of the home page, the membership directory and Meeting and Reports sections in the SCRID website

About the Presenter:


Cynthia Herbst, MS, CSC

Cynthia Herbst, MS, CSC. Cindy had been co-coordinator and instructor in the AA-Degree ASL/English Interpreter Education Program at Los Angeles Pierce College where she had worked full-time for 36 1/2 years, until her retirement from full-time teaching in June 2014. Cindy has Deaf parents and has been certified by RID (CSC) since 1978. She received her MS in Teaching Interpreting from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) in 1991. She has served as a consultant, workshop presenter, facilitator and mentor for over 36 years. From 1997 to 2002, Cindy served as an adjunct instructor, session facilitator, and mentor for the DO IT Center (Distance Opportunities for Interpreter Training Center) in Denver, Colorado.  Cindy served as the Pierce College Modern Language Department chair at Pierce College for 5 years, 2000-2004. She has been honored by the Deaf community and various interpreting organizations, receiving various commendations/ recognitions, including The Merit Award in 1998 from the California Home of the Deaf; Certificate of Appreciation in 2000 from the City of Los Angeles; National Center on Deafness at CSU, Northridge Outstanding Interpreting Service Award in 1992; the Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Annual Lou Fant Distinguished Service Award in 2004; National Center on Deafness at CSU, Northridge Virginia Hughes Interpreting Service Scholarship in 2005. Cindy is retired from full-time teaching, but she continues to work as an interpreter in a variety of settings, including: post-secondary education, community, and church since 1971, as a Video Relay Interpreter for Sorenson since 2004, and as a workshop presenter. As well, Cindy has served the organization of SCRID for numerous years in a variety of positions, including: President 1981-1983, Newsletter Distribution: 1981-1991; Treasurer: 2014-2016, and Vice President: 2016-present. She has supported the organization, its mission, its support of the Deaf community,  and its contribution to the local interpreting field since first joining in 1978.
