Video Transcript:

Patty Drasin: Micki Maupin worked as the first ASL Legal Interpreter in the Southern California for many years. She was the only one in all of Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, and Bakersfield. Actually, Bakersfield had (Faye Wilke) (F at chest). Micki Maupin (C above the ear on head like Mickey Mouse). She was one of the first ASL Legal Interpreters to specialize in the Legal arena. She educated judges about the value of Deaf people and their right to equal access.

Not only that, she also worked with Spanish Interpreters, educating them about how to recognize individuals who are Deaf and use ASL, it wasn’t just gesturing, but an actual form of language through the use of individual’s hands.

Micki was a role model during her years of service. Barbara Mathis and Debbie Bradley began working at the Los Angeles Superior Courts and worked with Micki after she opened the door to legal Interpreting field. Barbara and Debbie were lucky enough to have had the opportunity to work with Micki.

I recently found out Micki passed away on September 20, 2017. When Micki retired, she still attended interpreting workshops, supported SCRID, and even visited CSUN just to take workshops there. We owe her gratitude for all the work she did that contributed to our profession in working in the courtroom as Legal ASL Interpreters. When you go into a courtroom or perform any legal work, remember Micki Maupin, we are blessed to work as Legal ASL Interpreters because of the battles she fought. Thank you for your time.
